  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Football

Hernando Eagles game day

By DAVID MURPHY
Published February 17, 2006

WHAT: Hernando vs. Gulf Coast Raiders in a Southern States Football League game.

WHEN: 7:05 p.m. Saturday.

WHERE: Tom Fisher Stadium, Hernando High. RECORDS: Hernando 2-2 (third place in the North division); Gulf Coast 4-0 (first place in the South division). LAST WEEK: Hernando lost to the Orlando Rage 10-0. Gulf Coast beat the Vero Beach Hurricanes 50-0.

THE SKINNY: The Eagles have not scored since starting the season 2-0. Their defense has been solid, allowing just 30 points in the two losses. Hernando will have to stop a Raiders offense that has produced at least 50 points in three of four games. An expansion team, Gulf Coast features two former Pinellas County high school players of the year (Countryside's Isaiah Gwyn and Seminole's Joey Fabrizio) and former Buccaneers practice squad member (and Robinson High star) Zain Gilmore. Ex-Lions running back James Jones is the offensive coordinator of a unit that has scored at least four touchdowns in four games. Still, Raiders owner and coach Michael Mink said his club isn't taking Hernando, the 2005 Rice Bowl champion, lightly. "I know that they are the former champs and are a great organization with a good head coach," Mink said. "They have a good running back, a couple of good receivers and a very sound defense. ... They don't give up a lot of points."

THREE REASONS TO GO: One of the National Conference's best offenses vs. one of its best defenses; Raiders kicker Frank Borardi and punter Jason Moran were with the Eagles last season; it's either this or Olympic figure skating.
