County's management of trash needs to be dumped
Editor: Going back a ways, Citrus County's trash situation concerning the landfill was this: Local politicians, seeing that the FBI could not locate even such celebrities as Jimmy Hoffa in landfills, looked at the trash business as the best way to hide not only garbage, but tax levies. The county opened a landfill and legislated that all trash collected in the county had to be dumped there, even while charging as much as seven times the going rate as private operators. The Supreme Court ruled that exaction to be illegal.
Mayor should be punished for peddling his gimmick
The Andy Griffith Show has always been one of my favorites. In one particular episode, a snake oil salesman comes to Mayberry selling an elixir he claims will cure nearly any ailment. Aunt Bea's garden club meeting turns wild when the ladies overindulge in the stuff. Discovering the main ingredient is alcohol, Andy runs the guy out of town. Fortunately, the ladies suffer nothing more than the loss of a small financial investment and a hangover.
