McGriff, Karim hit 100-plus
By JOANNE KORTH, MARK LONG © St. Petersburg Times, published September 27, 1998 Senior WR Nafis Karim had a career-high 145 yards receiving on six catches, and Travis McGriff caught three passes for a career-high 124 yards. Karim scored three touchdowns in two minutes and 22 seconds, matching the number of touchdown receptions he had in 33 previous games. Coach Steve Spurrier gave Karim, who scored on catches of 37, 41 and 9 yards, one of two game balls. "Every time I got in the huddle it seemed like coach Spurrier was calling my number," Karim said. "It was happening so fast, I didn't really get a chance to think about it. Every time I turned around, the pass was coming my way." INJURY REPORT: Sophomore WR Ian Skinner, who made his first career start, dislocated his right kneecap on a 2-yard reception and likely will miss the remainder of the season, Spurrier said. RB Bo Carroll also left with a sprained left knee and could miss about three weeks. SIDELINED DEFENDERS: Senior CB Tony George, who missed most of last week with a sprained posterior collateral ligament in his left knee, did not play against the Wildcats. Reserve LB Keith Kelsey (hand) also did not play. Both defenders dressed, however. Freshman CB Robert Cromartie made his first career start in George's place and played well. "He played excellent," defensive coordinator Bob Stoops said. "They challenged him deep, and he came up with the plays." STREAK CONTINUES: Florida set a school record with its 24th consecutive home victory, surpassing the mark set between 1990 and 1993. The Gators are 28-1 against Southeastern Conference teams at The Swamp in the 1990s, including 13 straight home conference wins. McCASLIN BACK: Junior RB Eugene McCaslin of Tampa, who was suspended for the first three games for violating team rules, played sparingly. He carried twice for minus-2 yards. "He can help (the running game) if we can some blocking in there," Spurrier said. "We need to block a lot better." EYE ON THE GATORS: UF officials confirmed that Saturday's game at Alabama will be aired at 3:30 p.m. on Ch. 10. The game will be the Gators' third straight on CBS, and they are scheduled to be on CBS against Auburn and Georgia. KICKING IT: Freshman P Dave Wasielewski of Tampa likely kept the starting job, averaging 44.3 yards on seven punts. His long punt was a 51-yarder downed at Kentucky's 3-yard line. Walk-on PK Jeff Chandler made his first field-goal attempt of the season, a 21-yarder, but missed an extra point, the Gators' first miss in 22 tries. VISOR TOSS: Spurrier said last week that he had not thrown his visor in several years. His streak is over. Spurrier slammed his visor to the ground after Kentucky's A.J. Simon rushed for 10 yards on a fake punt. THIS AND THAT: The Gators are 15-2 under Spurrier in games following a loss. ... UF passed for 452 yards, the sixth-best single-game total in school history. ... The seven TD passes is the third-best single-game team total in SEC history. The UF and SEC record is nine, set against Central Michigan last year. ... Kentucky's 35 points were the most for a UF opponent in a win since Auburn lost 49-38 in 1995.
